    Frequently Asked Questions

What are these shoes made from, and how does the leather age?

These shoes are handcrafted from full-grain, naturally tanned cowhide leather -- a premium material prized for its durability and rich texture. Unlike mass-produced footwear, the vegetable-tanning process gives each pair a distinctive grain that develops a deeper, more individual patina over months of wear. The leather moulds gently to the shape of your foot, improving comfort while maintaining structural integrity season after season.

How should I size these, and do they need breaking in?

We recommend ordering your regular UK size. The full-grain leather will soften and mould to the contours of your foot over the first few wears, so an initially snug fit is perfectly normal -- avoid sizing up to compensate. If you're between sizes, choose the smaller option. A leather insole cushions each step and breathes naturally, reducing moisture build-up and keeping your feet comfortable from morning to evening.

How do I care for the leather on these shoes?

Regular care keeps the leather supple and extends the life of your shoes significantly. After each wear, wipe off surface dust with a soft, dry cloth and allow them to air on a shoe tree -- this draws out moisture and preserves the shape. Every few weeks, apply a thin layer of quality leather balm or cream, buff gently, and allow it to absorb overnight. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct heat or sunlight, which can dry and crack the hide.

Can these shoes be resoled when the sole wears down?

Yes -- the construction means the sole is attached in a way that allows a skilled cobbler to remove and replace it, extending the life of the shoes by years. This is a hallmark of quality footwear: rather than discarding a pair when the sole wears thin, you invest a fraction of the original cost in a resole and continue wearing shoes that have already moulded perfectly to your feet. We recommend resoling before the sole wears through to the welt for the best result.
